UPSC CSE Prelims Syllabus


GS PAPER I is an objective paper consisting of subjects like History, Indian National Movement, Geography- India and World, Economic and Social Development, General Issues on Environmental Ecology. BioDiversity and Climate change., General Science, Art and Culture, and Indian Society. Current events of National & International importance.

  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and Indian National Movement
  • Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world
  • Indian Polity and governance - constitution, political system, Panchayati Raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc.
  • Economic and social development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on environmental ecology, biodiversity and climate change- that do not require subject specialization.
  • General Science


GS PAPER II - CSAT (Aptitude test) -It has Reading Comprehension, Interpersonal skills including communication skills, Logical reasoning & analytical ability, Decision making & problem-solving skills, General mental ability, Basic numeracy (numbers & their relations and orders of magnitude.) Usually, difficulty will be Class 10th level, Last section would be Data interpretation covering charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. again class 10th level. General Studies Paper-II of IAS Exam is a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%. Mandatory to appear in both the papers.

  • Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.
